REAL ESTATE

EDUCATION
There are 19 institutions of higher education within 50 miles of Newport News. Among the schools is the second-oldest university in the nation, the College of William and Mary. The public school has notable alums among which are several of the country's founding fathers. Other colleges in the area include  Regent University in Virginia Beach City, Elizabeth City State University in Pasquotank County and Hampton University in Hampton County. The main operator of public grade schools in the city is the Newport News Public Schools (NNPS). The school system has 1 grade 6-12 school, 5 high schools, 8 middle schools, and 29 elementary schools.  All 5 high schools have been featured in Newsweek's list of the Top 1,000 U.S. Schools for 2005 and the NNPS enrolls about 32,000 students annually.  The district also has three non-traditional schools and learning centers. Several private schools are also located in the area.

PARKS AND RECREATION
Newport News is home to the second-largest city park in America, the 8,065-acre Newport News Park. The park is located in the northern part of the city and has the city's golf course on its premises. The park boasts over 30 miles of trails and has a 5.3 mile multi-use bicycle path. The park also offers bike and helmet rentals and provides an archery range, camping grounds, fishing facilities, and an aeromodel flying field for remote-controlled aircrafts. In total, Newport News Parks maintains 32 city parks all found throughout the city. Newport News also offers two public boat ramps at Denbigh Park Boat Ramp and Hilton Pier-Ravine. Denbigh Park also provides a fishing pier whereas the Hilton Pier offers a small beach in addition to the ravine.

CULTURE
Being a part of the Hampton Roads, not far from the Historic Triangle of Virginia, Newport News is steeped in history.  From battle sites to museums, there's plenty of culture and enlightenment. At the Mariners Museum, recovered artifacts from the USS Monitor are on display, totaling about 35,000 pieces and over 600,000 prints. The museum has an international focus with 10 permanent exhibits as well as changing, traveling and virtual galleries. The Virginia War Museum covers the history of the American military and collections include weapons, vehicles, uniforms, posters and more from various periods in American history. Sections of the Berlin Wall and parts of the Dachau Concentration Camp outer wall are also on display. Many other museums, sites of interest and current cultural centers are found in the city.
